Overall, the Director of Finance is responsible for maintaining the City of North Canton’s financial integrity and fiscal well-being. The duties and responsibilities of The Director of Finance are set forth in the North Canton City Charter.
The Finance Department maintains a general accounting system for the municipality and for each of its offices, departments, and agencies; keep books for and exercise financial budgetary control over each office, department, and agency; keep separate accounts for the items of appropriation contained in the municipal budget. The Finance Department collects and disburses funds for each department of the City. These funds include payroll and health insurance benefit payments.
Tax & Bill Collection
The Director of Finance shall be responsible for collection of all taxes and assessments and shall disburse the same as may be required by law or ordinance. The Utility Billing Department is also under the direction of the Director of Finance. The department is responsible for billing, collecting and customer service for over 9,000 customers.
The North Canton Finance Department has received multiple awards in the area of financial reporting. The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the City of North Canton for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the year ended December 31, 2017. This was the twenty-ninth consecutive year (1988 to 2017) that the City has achieved this prestigious award.
The Finance Department has also received multiple awards from the Auditor of State of Ohio. Most recently, the Department received the Auditor’s Award with Distinction for the 2017 reporting year. We hope to continue this tradition of excellence well into the future.
